Hierarchical Concelebrations, Synodal Meeting, and Clergy Conference

GOC Clergy Conference 2023

On Sunday, October 9/22, Hierarchs gathered together for a concelebration at the Cathedral of Saint Markella, in Astoria, New York.

Presiding at the Divine Liturgy was His Eminence Metropolitan Demetrius of America, the President of the Eparchial Synod. Concelebrating with His Eminence were Metropolitans Chrysostomos of Attika and Boetia and Photios of Demetrias, and Bishops Auxentios of Etna and Portland and Maximus of Pelagonia.

After the concelebration, a presentation was made by His Eminence Bishop Auxentios, concerning the Theological School of Saint Photios the Great, in Etna, California.

After the presentation, His Eminence Metropolitan Demetrius took the two bishops from Greece, together with those who traveled with them, to the Sacred Monastery of Saint John of San Francisco, in Cobleskill, New York.

The visitors from Greece were also taken to Novo Diveyevo Convent, and the Holy Trinity Monastery, in Jordanville, NY, to venerate the tomb of Saint Philaret, Blessed Archbishop Andrei, and other holy figures of the ROCOR.

Next, they went to the Clergy Conference which took place in Boston, at the Cathedral of Saint Mark of Ephesus. There, they met with many clergy. Before the conference began, there was a session of the Eparchial Synod.

Glory to God, all of the meetings went very well.

In the morning of Sunday October 16/29, His Eminence Metropolitan Demetrius served the Divine Liturgy with Metropolitan Chrysostomos, Metropolitan Photios, Metropolitan Moses, Bishop Auxentios, Bishop Christodoulos, and Bishop Maximus. The Hierarchs then took a picture of the Eparchial Synod.

We give thanks to God for His many blessings. Let us all pray for His Eminence, and the Sacred Eparchial Synod.

Why Do We Follow the Old Orthodox Calendar?

Why do we follow the Old Orthodox Calendar?

a Because based on it, the First Ecumenical Council established the Paschal Canon and appointed that the feast of Holy Pascha may fall anywhere from March 22nd until April 25th, while with the New (Papal) Calendar it can fall as late at May 8th.

b The Gregorian (Papal) Calendar has been condemned by three Pan-Orthodox Councils under Patriarch Jeremiah Tranos (1583, 1587, 1589) Read more...

Missions

Saint Matthew the Evangelist, Jonesboro, Arkansas

Jonesboro is a town located near the Eastern border of Arkansas, with a population of approximately 60,000. From a human standpoint, it’s not the most likely candidate for a traditional Orthodox mission, but for an Orthodox Christian who orders his priorities around Christ and His Church, it makes perfect sense. Ask A Priest

Is the GOC Insular?

Q. In considering becoming part of the GOC in America, I am getting warnings from various circles that the attitude of GOC people is that of being “walled off,” “arrogant,” “judgmental,” and “in your face” toward those not in the Genuine Orthodox Church, with accusations such as “World Orthodox” priests are “not even Christians” and the like. Could you give me your personal, realistic assessment of this dynamic and possibly refer me to an official statement on how GOC members should and do relate to and communicate with those in “World Orthodoxy”?
